2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee vs Ford Explorer

Serving Dublin, Columbus, Hilliard, Westerville, Marysville, OH

The SUV segment continues to expand its popularity. For years, the Jeep Grand Cherokee has been known for its ability to conquer rough terrain. However, the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee lineup features a trim to suit the needs of every driver. The mid-size SUV’s upscale styling and technology-filled interior will intrigue plenty of families.

Like the Grand Cherokee, the new Ford Explorer is available with several high-end features. Its third-row seat makes it a good option for large families. Take a look at how the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee stacks up against the new Ford Explorer.

Performance

Both of these SUVs come equipped with a strong V-6 engine. The Grand Cherokee’s Pentastar engine develops a potent 290 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. Meanwhile, the Explorer matches the Grand Cherokee’s 290-horsepower rating while producing 255 pound-feet of torque. Despite their nearly identical power ratings, the Grand Cherokee can tow 1200 pounds more than the Explorer. From a performance standpoint, the SRT model is the most exciting version of the Grand Cherokee. Its Hemi V-8 engine develops a thrilling 475 horsepower. On the other hand, the Explorer Sport’s turbocharged V-6 engine develops 365 horsepower. With a stunning 0-60 time of 4.8 seconds, the Grand Cherokee SRT easily outshines the Explorer Sport’s 6.3-second sprint to 60 mph.

Off-Road Capabilities

Over the course of the last 20 years, the Jeep Grand Cherokee has won multiple awards for its legendary off-road prowess. The SUV’s tough-nosed 4WD system enables it to tackle a variety of different landscapes. Jeep also offers an exclusive Off-Road Adventure package. This package includes several off-road goodies, including an air suspension and a locking rear differential. A Selec-Terrain feature allows you to choose the ideal drive mode. The Ford Explorer is also available with all-wheel drive and a multi-mode traction control system. Although the Explorer can handle a basic dirt trail, it is not designed to be taken on a serious off-road excursion. It lacks upgrades such as thick skid plates and an off-road suspension.

Safety

In terms of styling, the Grand Cherokee’s distinctive grille and signature headlight design give it a striking appearance. There is no overlooking its muscular body. Dual chrome exhaust tips and LED running lights come standard on the higher trim levels. Featuring a set of 20-inch black rims and a special body kit, the High Altitude package makes the Grand Cherokee look even more aggressive. The new Ford Explorer is also a handsome SUV. Squared-off headlights give the Explorer an updated look. However, the Explorer cannot match the Grand Cherokee’s rugged character.

The new Ford Explorer deserves to be complimented for its overall package. Unfortunately, it fails to overtake the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The Grand Cherokee’s exciting performance and unmatched off-road capabilities give it the upper hand. To see how the new Grand Cherokee performs on the road, stop by your local Jeep dealer to take a test drive.
