With the popular trend towards making SUVs more compact for urban cruising, it was almost inevitable that Jeep would formulate its own entry. The 2016 Jeep Renegade fills this niche quite well while also bringing some capabilities only a Jeep could achieve into the category. Along with the prominent seating and plentiful cargo room of other compact SUVs, the Renegade includes the off-road prowess and stabilizing wide stance characteristic of Jeeps. Performance
Under the hood of the nearly 14 foot vehicle, two 4-cylinder options are available. The turbocharged 1.4 liter model puts out 160 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. It’s paired with a six-speed manual transmission that keeps the overall weight down. For more power, a 2.4 liter engine supplies 180 horses and 175 pound-feet of torque. This power plant is coupled with a nine-speed automatic transmission for fuel-efficient shifting. Fuel-wise, the 1.4 liter engine offers a surprise by maintaining the same 24 urban miles per gallon and 31 highway miles per gallon* with either two-wheel or four-wheel drive. Using the 2.4 liter version, front-wheel drive provides 22 mpg city and 31 mpg* while four-wheel capability produces 21 mpg city and 29 mpg highway*.
Interior
The Jeep Renegade has a few advantages over the competition as far as space is concerned. Holding five passengers altogether, front occupants can expect 41.1 inches of headroom and 41.2 inches of legroom. Second-row passengers can also enjoy 40.5 inches of headroom combined with 35.1 inches of legroom. Due to a wide frame designed for extra traction on winding trails, the Renegade gives passengers ample shoulder room of 55.9 inches up front and 55.1 inches in back. Behind the back seat, 18.5 cubic feet of storage space is easily accessible. With either a 60/40 or 40/20/40 split fold-down back seat, the vehicle includes a fold-down front passenger seat on the Latitude, Limited, and Trailhawk versions that permits extra-long cargo to be loaded inside.
Features
With offerings like a standard four-speaker AM/FM stereo system, two 12-volt outlets, and power locks, windows, and mirrors, the Renegade hasn’t sacrificed comfort for toughness. In high-end models, features like air conditioning, nine speakers, a Uconnect infotainment center accessed through a 5-inch touch screen, and Bluetooth connectivity are among the many options. Putting some daylight on the subject is easy with the optional My Sky sunroof with two panels that span the front and back seats and are opened either manually or automatically. Also, a control knob for different off-road conditions makes roaming the wilderness simple.
Safety
In addition to a sturdy build, all versions of the Renegade come with seven airbags, anti-lock brakes, traction and stability control, hill start assist, and with the exception of the entry-level Sport model, a rearview camera. Optional technology-based safety enhancements include forward-collision, lane-departure, and rear cross-traffic warnings along with blind-spot monitoring.
Along with handling paved surfaces, all Renegade models, especially the Trailhawk model with its added 0.8 inch clearance and rock climbing setting, can also conquer unpaved terrain including 45 degree slopes better than nearly all the competition.
