Performance
The 2016 Dodge Charge couples performance engines with a smart eight-speed automatic transmission and real-wheel drive. There are multiple choices, starting with the award-winning Pentastar V-6. With this engine, the SE and SXT editions earn 31 mpg highway*. The available all-wheel drive system, available on the SE and SXT, has been called innovative for its on-road performance. The Super Track Pack, new for 2016, adds track-tuned performance to affordable SXT editions. The next stop is the R/T's 5.7-liter V-8 with 370 horsepower. Under the hood of the SRT 392 and the R/T Scat Pack editions, a Best—in-Class Hemi V-8 delivers 485 horsepower and a remarkable 475 lb.-ft. of torque. The Hellcat offers a 6.2-liter supercharged V-8. This has a top speed of 204 mph thanks to 707 horses under the hood. Torque levels hit a remarkable 650 lb.-ft. It can do the 0-60 mph sprint in just 3.7 seconds, a record for a sedan this size.
Interior
Edmunds writes that this interior is one of the best for the money. Hallmarks include quality materials, truly advanced technologies, and a sleek dashboard design. The 2016 Charger offers more standards on its basic SE edition than many rivals. Push button start and a leather-wrapped steering wheel invite drivers to get going. A six-way power seat ensures comfort. The rear seats split-fold for extra cargo. The SXT adds heated front seats, power lumbar support, and dual-zone climate control. Other options include leather upholstery, suede-like accents, and a power-adjusting front passenger seat. Special weather busters include ventilated front seats and heated back seats. Power-adjustable pedals and a power-adjustable tilt-telescoping steering wheel make it easier to find a good driving position.
Features
On the dash, Dodge offers a choice of two UConnect systems. The 5-inch screen comes with Bluetooth streaming audio. Equipment includes two charge-only USB hook-ups, a regular USB audio port, and an auxiliary input. The 8.4-inch touchscreen permits more smartphone-app integration. It works well with voice commands, offers satellite capability, and coordinates with a rearview camera.
Safety
The sedan's athleticism must be matched with safety. For that, Dodge has stocked it with active front head restraints, side curtain airbags, and a driver knee airbag. The seven-airbag system works electronically, recognizing when cushioning is needed. The stability controls also work electronically to stabilize the car when taking curves at speed. Crash avoidance features include automatic braking with a forward collision alert. Lane-keeping intervention assists the lane watch function. A rear cross-traffic alert is part of the helpful blind-spot warning system.
